Environmental Highlight: Pine Needles to Offset Erosion Hot Spots

Heavenly in South Lake Tahoe has been testing a piece of equipment that can broadcast pine needles onto high Priority Erosion Hotspots in the Sky Meadows area. This unique machine, nicknamed the "Shred Vac," breaks down the needles to ½ of their original size, or even less. It has the capability to break down small twigs, branches and cones too. Once the material passes through the Shred Vac, it falls between any growing vegetation to help the regrowth and restoration process. Equipment like this helps Vail Resorts take steps towards being more sustainable by utilizing on-mountain, natural materials to maintain the mountain. If this technique produces positive results, Heavenly will consider purchasing a "Shred Vac" to keep on-site.
